A short review of Japanese contribution on the comparative biology of the Sitophilus complex is given. Many differences between the two species, Sitophilus zeamais and S. oryzae including body size, distribution, food preference, hibernating habit, field infestation, heating, developmental period and flying ability have been found. In S. oryzae, there was great variation in body size among the strains collected from differents countries. Reduction in body size was associated with changes in the male/fermale body size ratio, in flying ability, reproductive incompatibility with S. zeamais and tolerance of crowding. It is concluded that S. oryzae is differentiating into a larger and smaller sized strain, the process representing adaptation to life in stored products, and that the small strain found in Japan represents an advanced stage in this adaptation. |
